Common butterwort

Common butterwort

A perennial plant of the Utricularia family (APG classification: Utricularia family). The leaves are basal, 3-5 cm long, ovate-oblong, with inward-curling edges, and densely covered with short glandular hairs that secrete mucus. In July and August, a single purple lip-shaped flower opens sideways at the end of a 5-15 cm tall flower stalk. Known as a carnivorous plant, when a small animal touches the surface of the leaves, the leaves close, engulfing the animal, dissolving it in the mucus, and digesting it. It grows on damp rock walls and grasslands from mountainous to alpine areas, and is widely distributed in Shikoku, Honshu north of the Chubu region, and from Hokkaido to the Circumpolar Arctic. The name comes from the fact that the flowers resemble violets, and it is a carnivorous plant.

The genus Viola has entire leaves that grow in a rosette shape at the base. There are about 80 species in the world, and this species and the Red Viola are found in Japan.
