Insect-trimmed Dianthus

Japanese: ムシトリナデシコ
Insect-trimmed Dianthus
A fall-sown annual plant of the Caryophyllaceae family native to southern Europe. It was introduced to Japan during the Edo period and is usually cultivated in gardens, but has become naturalized in some places. It grows to 40-60cm tall. The entire plant is covered in white powder, and the leaves are spatula-shaped, opposite, and thin overall. In May and June, it produces small pink flowers with five petals in a corymb at the top of the stem. There is a mucus-secreting part under the node at the top of the stem, which feels sticky when touched. It is highly cold-resistant.
