Beelzebub, Baal-Zebul, or Baal-Zebub, the god of the Philistine city of Ekron, was called the "god (lord) of flies" and was said to be a god who controlled flies and protected humans from them. Baal-Zebub was a derogatory name given by the Israelites to Baal, the Syrian-Canaanite fertility god, who was said to have arisen from the swarms of flies that infested sacrificial animals. ...
