A town in Tomata County in the northern part of Okayama Prefecture, occupying the basin of the Yoshii River and its tributary, the Kagami River. It is said to have been developed by Kagamisakube during the Kofun period, and there are many ancient tombs. The main settlement is Teramoto. Forestry and beef cattle breeding are thriving in the northern mountainous area. Columnar joints of basalt can be seen on Mt. Onyama and Mt. Menyama. In the central area are Okutsu Hot Springs and Okutsu Valley, and in the north is Ningyo Pass, known for its uranium mines. In March 2005, Okutsu Town, Tomi Village, and Kamisaihara Village from Tomata County were incorporated. 419.68 km2 . Population: 13,580 (2010). 岡山県北部,吉井川と支流香々美(かがみ)川流域を占める苫田(とまた)郡の町。古墳時代に鏡作部が開発したといわれ,古墳が多い。主集落は寺元。北部山地は林業と肉牛飼育が盛ん。男山(おんやま),女山(めんやま)に玄武岩の柱状節理が見られる。中部に奥津温泉,奥津渓,北部にウラン鉱山で知られる人形峠がある。2005年3月苫田郡奥津町,富村,上齋原村を編入。419.68km2。1万3580人(2010)。
