The 10th king of the Konbaung dynasty of Burma. Reigned 1853-78. His childhood name was Maung Lwin. He was a prince of the 8th king, Thayawaddy, and was a half-brother of the 9th king, Pagan. In 1852, when the Second Burmese War broke out, he rebelled against his elder brother, King Pagan, together with his younger brother, Prince Kanaung, and ascended to the throne the following year. He immediately stopped fighting after assuming the throne, but he refused to agree to the conclusion of a peace treaty until his death, because the Viceroy of India unilaterally declared the Pegu region to be a British colony. To divert his mind from this humiliating event, he built a new royal palace on the southwest foot of Mandalay Hill in 1857 and moved the capital there.

コンバウン朝ビルマの第10代国王。在位1853‐78年。幼名はマウン･ルイン。第8代国王ターヤーワディの王子で，第9代国王パガンとは異母兄弟にあたる。第2次ビルマ戦争が起こった1852年，弟カナウン侯と共同で兄のパガン王に反乱，翌年，王位についた。就位後ただちに戦闘を停止させたが，インド総督によってペグー地方のイギリス領化が一方的に宣言されたため，講和条約の締結には死ぬまで同意しなかった。この屈辱的なできごとから気持ちをそらすため，57年マンダレー丘の南西麓に新しい王城を築いて遷都した。
