Capacitance - Capacitance

Capacitance - Capacitance

It is also called electrostatic capacitance. When a charge is applied to one of two insulated conductors, a charge of equal magnitude and opposite sign is induced in the other conductor. The ratio of the applied charge to the potential difference between the two conductors is called capacitance. When a voltage is applied between insulated conductors, the charge stored in the system is proportional to the capacitance. The magnitude of capacitance differs depending on the material used for insulation, and is proportional to the area of the electrodes and inversely proportional to the distance between the electrodes. Capacitance is also defined for a single conductor and a system of three or more conductors. The unit of capacitance is defined as 1 farad (F), which is the capacitance that stores 1 coulomb of charge when a potential difference of 1 volt is applied. The symbol is C.
