Idaten

Japanese: 韋駄天 - いだてん
Idaten
[1] (Skanda, transliterated as 间建達, 揵達, 陋だ, etc.; also called 陋将) [1] Buddhist term. One of the eight generals of the southern Zochoten. The leader of the 32 generals, including the eight generals of the Four Heavenly Kings. Originally a Brahmanic deity, he is said to be the son of Shiva or Agni. He was adopted into Buddhism and became the guardian deity of monks and temples. His image is of a god wearing armor and holding a sword in both hands. There is a popular legend that after Shakyamuni passed away, a swift demon stole a tooth from the Buddha's relic , and this god chased after it and took it back. It is said that he can run at great speed and eliminate demons, so the word also refers to a fast-footed person or thing. [2] Noh play. Written by Kanze Kojiro Nobumitsu. A monk who received a relic from Idaten builds a temple. This is an extra piece and is not currently performed. [2] [Noun] ① An abbreviation of "Idaten bashiri (Idaten running)". ※Takekurabe (1895-96) by Higuchi Ichiyo, 4: "Running out of this room, is this Idaten ?" ② A fast runner. ※Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Seisui-ki (1688), 2: "Idaten's boatman, Mosaku " ③ A type of musical accompaniment in a play. Used in scenes where the characters start running, such as the chase in "Ise Ondo Koi Neba - Aburaya no Dan". ④ A type of puppet used in Bunraku. A slightly easier style of running compared to Danshichi-hashi.
