A nobleman in the Kamakura period. His pen name was Fukoon-in. His posthumous Buddhist name was Gyoku. He was the founder of the Nijo family, one of the five regent families. His father was Kujo Michiie. In 1242 (Ninji 3), he became the regent and head of the clan, but he fell out with his father when Michiie favored his younger brother Sanetsune. Furthermore, when the Kujo clan was punished by the emperor for plotting against the Hojo clan by his father and Shogun Yoritsune and his son, Yoshizane was spared because he had been in cahoots with the Hojo clan. As a result, he was disowned by his father and did not receive any share of his land, which led him to establish his own family.
