An industrial city in the Java Timur Province, eastern Java, Indonesia. It is located 140 km west-southwest of Surabaya, on a fertile plain along the Madiun River (a tributary of the Solo River). There are large factories for railway repair, textiles, lumber, and tobacco, as well as sugar and other agricultural processing. There is a cemetery for soldiers who died in the War of Independence. It was the site of the Madiun Incident in September 1948, when the Communist Party attempted to establish a revolutionary government. Population: 150,562 (1980).
