Born: December 20, 1738, Nancy [Died] March 29, 1814. French sculptor. His real name was Claude Michel. He was a member of the Adam family of sculptors from Lorraine. At the age of 17, he went to Paris to study under his uncle L. Sigisbert Adam, and later worked under JB Pigalle. In 1759, he won the Prix de Rome at the Academie, and in 1762 he traveled to Rome to study, returning to Japan in 1771. Except for a stay in Nancy from 1792 to 1798, he mostly worked in Paris. He produced small terracotta statues and marble statues in an elegant and free Rococo style. His major work is Nymph and Satyr (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York).
