Washington clam (milk mussel)

Japanese: ミルクイガイ(海松食貝) - ミルクイガイ（英語表記）Washington clam

A bivalve mollusks of the family Muscidae (illustration). Product name: Mirugai. The shell is egg-shaped with a wide gap between the two shells. The shell is 14 cm long, 9 cm high, and 5.5 cm bulge. It is white and covered with a thick yellowish brown to dark brown skin. The inside is yellowish white. At the joint below the apex of the shell is a large belt holder, on which a black belt is placed that opens the shell. The mollusk has a thick water tube extending backwards. The inlet and outlet water tubes are attached to each other and covered with gray-brown skin. It is said that a mill grew on top of this water tube, hence the name Mirugai or Milk Mussel.

バカガイ科の二枚貝（イラスト）。商品名ミルガイ。殻は卵形で，両殻間は大きく開いている。殻の長さ14cm，高さ9cm，膨らみ5.5cmになる。白色で黄褐色から暗褐色の厚い皮をかぶる。内面は黄白色。殻頂の下のかみ合せには大きい弾帯受けがあり，殻を開く働きをする黒い弾帯がのっている。軟体は後方へ太い水管を出す。出入水管は互いにくっつき，灰褐色の皮でおおわれている。この水管の上にミルが生えていたというのでミルガイまたはミルクイガイの名がある。
