Umbrian School - Umbria

This school of painting flourished mainly in the second half of the 15th century in Umbria, central Italy. In the 14th century, Umbrian painting was influenced by Florence and the Marche, but was mainly under the control of the Sienese school. On top of this foundation, the new painting that emerged in Florence in the 15th century spread and gave birth to a unique school of painting. For example, from the second half of the 1430s onwards, Domenico Veneziano, Fra Angelico and Benozzo Gozzoli produced works in various parts of Umbria, and after 60 years, Piero della Francesca and Filippo Lippi produced important works in Perugia and Spoleto. Inspired by these activities, excellent local painters developed, mainly in Perugia and Foligno. These artists include Benedetto Bonfigli, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo and Matteo da Guardo. The most famous of these, and a symbol of the Umbrian school, is Perugino. He gained widespread popularity at the end of the 15th century for his unique religious paintings, which reflected the traditional devout religious sentiment of the Umbrian people, with their rational arrangement of gentle natural scenes and sweet figures. He established large workshops in Perugia and Florence, and his activities extended beyond the borders of Umbria. His pupils included Raphael from Urbino and Pintoricchio, who was born in Perugia.

Other Umbrian masters, such as Giovanni di Pietro (known as Lo Spagno), Eusebio di San Giorgio, and Pastora (Antonio Massari), imitated the styles of Perugino, Raphael, and Pintoricchio, but under the influence of the great masters of the High Renaissance, the Umbrian school lost its originality.

イタリア中部のウンブリア地方に、主として15世紀後半に栄えた画派。ウンブリア絵画は、14世紀にはフィレンツェやマルケ地方の影響も受けたが、おもにシエナ派の支配下にあった。その素地のうえに、15世紀にフィレンツェで誕生した新しい絵画の影響が及び、独自の画派が生まれる。たとえば1430年代後半以降、ドメニコ・ベネチアーノ、フラ・アンジェリコ、ベノッツォ・ゴッツォーリらがウンブリア各地で制作し、60年を過ぎると、ピエロ・デッラ・フランチェスカやフィリッポ・リッピがペルージアやスポレートで重要な作品を描いた。こうした活動に触発されて、ペルージアとフォリーニョを中心に地元の優れた画家が育つ。ベネデット・ボンフィーリやフィオレンツォ・ディ・ロレンツォ、マッテオ・ダ・グアルドらがそれである。そのなかでもっとも名高く、ウンブリア派の象徴のようになっているのがペルジーノである。彼は、ウンブリア人が伝統的にもっている敬虔(けいけん)な宗教心を反映した、穏やかな自然と甘美な人物を合理的に配した独特の宗教画で15世紀末に広い人気を博した。そしてペルージアとフィレンツェに大工房を構え、その活動はウンブリアの境界を越えていた。弟子にはウルビーノ出身のラファエッロ、ペルージア生まれのピントリッキョがいる。

　このほかウンブリア派には、ロ・スパーニョとして知られるジョバンニ・ディ・ピエトロやエウゼビオ・ディ・サン・ジョルジョ、あるいはパストーラ（アントニオ・マッサーリ）らがおり、ペルジーノやラファエッロ、あるいはピントリッキョらの作風に倣った作品を残している。しかし、盛期ルネサンスの巨匠たちの影響のもとに、ウンブリア派はその独自性を失っていった。
