...The head mask of the Tosa Shrine in Kochi bears the signature of Chikanobu, dated 1528. Works by the second Jirozaemon and the third Bitchujo have the inscription "Iseki" engraved on the back of the mask, so this school was also known as "Katakana Iseki." The fourth Kawachi Ieshige (died 1645) was active in Edo and was highly valued by the Shogunate and other feudal lords. He was a master craftsman known as the best in the country, and his coloring was so unique that it was called "Kawachi coloring."...
