American gay liberation activist and politician. After working as a sergeant in the Navy and for an insurance company, Milk moved to San Francisco in 1973. He opened a camera shop with his girlfriend and contributed to the development of the area where many gay people lived. He ran for city executive and was elected in 1977, successfully enacting gay rights ordinances and other laws, but was shot and killed by his colleague Dan White in 1978. After the trial, thousands of gays, angry at the lightness of the perpetrator's sentence, held protest demonstrations known as "White Nights."
