The name of a layperson who plays a central role in the Mahayana Buddhist scripture, the Vimalakirti Sutra (translated by Kumarajiva, abbreviated as the Vimalakirti Sutra). Vimalakirti is an abbreviation of Vimalakirti, and his original Sanskrit name is Vimalakirti. As another translation of the sutra (translated by Xuanzang) translates it as "purity," it can also be translated as "a person who has a reputation for purity." In the sutra, this person is said to have lived in Vaiśāli, a city-state of the Lichavi tribe during the Buddha's lifetime.

大乗仏教の一経典《維摩詰所説経》(クマーラジーバ訳，略称《維摩経》)の中で中心となって活躍する居士の名。〈維摩〉は〈維摩詰〉の略名で，サンスクリットの原名はビマラキールティVimalakīrti。同経の別訳(玄奘訳)が〈無垢（むく）称〉と訳しているように〈無垢という評判をとった(人)〉という意で，〈浄名（じようみよう）〉とも訳される。この人物は，経典中では仏在世当時，リッチャビーLicchavī(離車)族の都市国家バイシャーリーVaiśālī(毘舎離。
