The name of a layperson who plays a central role in the Mahayana Buddhist scripture, the Vimalakirti Sutra (translated by Kumarajiva, abbreviated as the Vimalakirti Sutra). Vimalakirti is an abbreviation of Vimalakirti, and his original Sanskrit name is Vimalakirti. As another translation of the sutra (translated by Xuanzang) translates it as "purity," it can also be translated as "a person who has a reputation for purity." In the sutra, this person is said to have lived in Vaiśāli, a city-state of the Lichavi tribe during the Buddha's lifetime. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
