Russian film director. Born in Latvia. He had a major impact on world cinema with his montage theory and its implementation in Battleship Potemkin (1925). He later produced films such as October (1927), which commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Russian Revolution, but these were revised and altered. In 1929, he traveled to Western Europe and then to Hollywood, returning to Japan in 1932. Under the Stalin regime, his films were criticized for being formalistic and straying from socialist realism, making it difficult to continue making films, and he also taught at film schools. His later works include Alexander Nevsky (1938) and Ivan the Terrible (1941-1946; the second part was released in 1958).

ロシアの映画監督。ラトビア生れ。モンタージュ理論とその実践である《戦艦ポチョムキン》（1925年）によって，世界の映画に大きな影響を与えた。その後ロシア革命10周年を記念した《十月》（1927年）などを製作するが，修正や改変を受ける。1929年から西欧をへてハリウッドに渡り，1932年帰国。スターリン政権下で社会主義リアリズムからはずれた形式主義と批判されて製作が困難となり，映画学校での教育にもたずさわった。以後の作品に《アレクサンドル・ネフスキー》（1938年），《イワン雷帝》（1941年―1946年。第２部は1958年公開）がある。
