...The Mozambican Liberation Front (FRELIMO), founded in 1962 with Eduardo Mondlane (1920-69) as its chairman, began armed struggle in 1964, using neighboring Tanzania as its base, and liberated the northern part of the country, which accounted for 20% of the country's territory, the following year. Mondlane was assassinated by a mail bomb in 1969, and was replaced by Samora Moïsés Machel (1933-86) as chairman and Marcelino dos Santos (1931- ) as vice-chairman.
