A Japanese-English term for a simple restaurant that served milk, bread, mandarin oranges, soft drinks, etc. They were popular in Tokyo and other regional cities from around 1907 (Meiji 40) to the early Showa period, and provided a place for ordinary people and students to relax and converse, stocking newspapers, magazines, official gazettes, etc. for free viewing, but from around 1921 (Taisho 10), they gradually changed into coffee shops, and today, faint vestiges of the name can be seen in milk stands at train stations and amusement parks.
