Japan-China peace efforts at the end of the Pacific War. In August 1944, just after the formation of the Koiso Kuniaki cabinet, Tamura Shinsaku, a former journalist for the Asahi Shimbun based in Beijing, suggested to Prime Minister Koiso, through Ogata Taketora, head of the Information Bureau, that he promote peace efforts with the Republic of China government (President Chiang Kai-shek) in Chongqing, using Miao Bin as an intermediary. Miao, who had previously served as a member of the Central Committee of the Kuomintang, became vice-chairman of the New People's Association, a pro-Japanese organization established by the Japanese military in North China after the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and became vice-president of the Legislative Yuan when the Wang Jingwei government was established. However, his contacts with the Chiang government were revealed, and in 1944 he was given the idle job of vice-president of the Examination Yuan.
