The name "roller" comes from the fact that skaters skate by using the rotation of wheels, which are attached to the soles of both the left and right shoes. Usually, skates with four wheels on the front and back are called "roller skates", but there are also skates with one row of four wheels (inline skates) for ice skating practice. Roller skating competitions are broadly divided into three categories, like ice skating: "speed", "figure", and "hockey". "Speed" is a competition in which skaters compete for the fastest speed over a certain distance, and is held on a rink or on a road, with distances ranging from 300 to 20,000 meters. Competition events include short-distance time trials (one person), scratch races (two people), and medium- to long-distance open races (around 10 people). Other events include point races and relays. "Figure" is known internationally as artistic skating, and there are four competition events: men's and women's regulation, men's and women's free, pairs, and dance, and the rink is a rectangle measuring 50 meters by 25 meters. "Hockey" is a sport in which a 40m x 20m rink is divided into two zones, and two teams of five players each try to score goals using a stick. In international matches, the game lasts for two halves of 25 minutes. Fouls include body checking, pushing, and high-sticking. Clothing and protective gear consist of T-shirts and shorts, with only shin guards, knee pads, and gloves permitted. Goalkeepers also wear masks, protectors, leg guards, and gloves.

Rule Changes

As of April 2008, figure skating has been expanded to include "inline figure," which is free skating only; "show group," which is a show performed by 16 to 30 people; and "basic," which is performed by 12 to 24 people and has rules on movement. Hockey matches last 20 minutes each, with a 10-minute break. "Inline hockey," which uses ice hockey equipment and sticks on a 60m x 30m rink, is also played.

左右両足の靴底に車輪をつけ、車輪の回転を利用して滑ることから、「ローラー」の名称が生まれた。通常、前後四車輪のものを「ローラースケート」とよぶが、アイススケートの練習用に、四車輪が1列のもの（インライン）もある。ローラースケートの競技は、アイススケートと同じように、「スピード」「フィギュア」「ホッケー」の三つに大別される。「スピード」は、一定距離の滑走スピードを競うもので、リンク上で行うものと、道路上で行うものとがあり、距離は300～2万メートルまである。競技種目は、短距離のタイムトライアル（1名）、スクラッチレース（2名）、中長距離はオープンレース（10名前後）で行う。このほかポイントレース、リレーなどがある。「フィギュア」は、国際的にはアーティスティックスケーティングとよばれ、競技種目は、男子・女子の規定、男子・女子のフリー、ペア、ダンスの4種で、リンクは50メートル×25メートルの長方形である。「ホッケー」は、40メートル×20メートルのリンクを二つのゾーンに区分し、5名ずつの2チームで、スティックを使ってボールを相手ゴールに入れあう競技である。試合時間は、国際試合の場合25分の前・後半で行う。ボディチェック、プッシング、ハイスティックなどが反則となる。服装・防具は、Tシャツ、ショートパンツで、すね当てと膝(ひざ)当て、手袋のみが許されている。またゴールキーパーは、面、プロテクター、レガード、手袋などをつける。

ルール変更

2008年4月現在、フィギュアには、フリーのみの「インラインフィギュア」、16人～30人でショーを行う「ショーグループ」、12人～24人で行い、動作規定がある「バシジョン」が追加されている。ホッケーの試合時間は前・後半20分間で、休憩は10分間となっている。また、60メートル×30メートルのリンクでアイスホッケーの防具とスティックを使用する「インラインホッケー」も行われている。
