[Died] August 18, 1983. London. German-born British art historian and architectural historian. Worked at the Dresden State Art Museum and became a lecturer at the University of Göttingen, but moved to Britain in 1934 due to Nazi oppression, and later became a professor of art history at Cambridge and London universities. He was an editorial board member and contributor to the Penguin Pelican History of Art series and Architectural Review. His main works include Pioneers of Modern Design (1936), An Outline of European Architecture (many revised editions since 1943), Studies in Art, Architecture and Design (68), and A History of Building Types (76).
