An island in the Pacific Ocean, located in the eastern part of Okinawa Prefecture, about 360 km east of Okinawa Island. It consists of Minamidaito Island, Kitadaito Island, and Okidaito Island (Rasa Island). Minamidaito Island and Kitadaito Island were officially recognized as Japanese territory in 1885, and belonged to Okinawa Prefecture at the same time. The islands were uninhabited, but in 1899, Tamaki Han'emon of Hachijo Island leased them from the government and began development, starting sugarcane cultivation. Okidaito Island came under the jurisdiction of Okinawa Prefecture in 1900. After World War II, a village system was implemented in 1946, and the villages of Minamidaito and Kitadaito were established. It is a monoculture region, with sugarcane and other crops being the mainstay of the area, and the residents' livelihoods depend on sugar factories.
