…In the Heian period, servants who served under noble families were called 'kanin' (family vassals), but the title was also used for servants of the heads of military families, such as the Genji and Heike clans, and the character 'Go' was sometimes added as an honorific. After the Kamakura Shogunate was established, the shogun's family members were also called 'Kamakuradono no gokenin' (Kamakura-dono no gokenin) or 'Kanto gokenin' (Kanto gokenin) as honorifics, and later these titles became fixed as titles of status. When Minamoto no Yoritomo raised his army in 1180 (Jisho 4), those who quickly joined his side were the Hojo clan, who were related to him, as well as samurai who were hereditary retainers of the Genji, mainly from Izu and Sagami. …
