Staircase writing - kaidanmon

...The name was probably derived from the fact that its shape resembles fish scales. Geometric patterns include sawtooth patterns in which triangular units are arranged in parallel, and staircase patterns in which they are arranged diagonally. Also, scale patterns, in which semicircles are layered like fish scales, are commonly seen in Greece, Rome, and Western Asia.
