An important archaeological site from the Mycenaean civilization in the Argos region of the northeastern Peloponnese Peninsula on the Greek mainland. It is also called Mycenae, and in modern Greek it is pronounced Mykine. After modern Greece gained independence, the Athenian Archaeological Society was founded in 1837, and the first excavation at Mycenae was attempted in 1841 by one of the society's executives as part of the society's project. Then, in 1874, Schliemann, who had unearthed "Priam's Treasure" at Troy the previous year, excavated 34 sites on the Acropolis. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
