Floating rice

Japanese: 浮稲 - うきいね

This refers to a group of rice varieties adapted to paddy fields where the water depth is extremely deep. They grow attached to the soil, but the tips of the stems and leaves appear to float on the surface of the deeply flooded water, hence the name. Compared to ordinary rice, they have a greater number of elongated internodes, can grow to a height of several meters, and have many roots that extend into the water. They are cultivated in the lowlands of major river basins from India to Vietnam, where the dry and rainy seasons are clearly separated. In this region, as the rainy season progresses, the swollen rivers flood and the water levels in the paddy fields in the basins gradually rise, with the water depth often reaching 4 to 5 meters.

水深が著しく深くなるような水田に適応したイネの品種群をいう。土壌に固着して生育するが，茎葉の先端部が，深く湛水（たんすい）された水面上に漂うような様相を呈するため，このような名称で呼ばれている。ふつうのイネに比べて，伸長節間数が多く，草丈は数mに達することもあり，多数の根が水中に伸長する。乾季と雨季の区別が明りょうな，インドからベトナムにかけての大河川流域の低地で栽培される。この地域では，雨季の進行に伴って，増水した河川がはんらんし，流域の水田の水位はしだいに上昇し，4～5mの水深に達することもまれでない。
