1619‐55 French man of letters. Born into a Parisian family, he studied at the Beauvais Academy and then joined the Guards of Casteljaloux, where he gained fame for his bravery in numerous duels, but was seriously wounded during the capture of Mouzon (1639) and Arras (1640) and retired from the military. He later became interested in philosophy, and is said to have studied under Gassendi and the skeptical free thinker La Mothe le Baillet, but at the same time he also associated with free thinkers such as Scallon, Chapelle, and Molière, and began a dissolute and reckless life of writing.
