Cyrano de Bergerac (English)

French man of letters. Born into a Parisian family, he studied at the Beauvais Academy and then joined the Guards of Casteljaloux, where he gained fame for his bravery in numerous duels, but was seriously wounded during the capture of Mouzon (1639) and Arras (1640) and retired from the military. He later became interested in philosophy, and is said to have studied under Gassendi and the skeptical free thinker La Mothe le Baillet, but at the same time he also associated with free thinkers such as Scallon, Chapelle, and Molière, and began a dissolute and reckless life of writing.

フランスの文学者。パリの町人の家に生まれ，ボーベ学院に学んだのちカステルジャルー親衛中隊に入り，幾多の決闘で勇名を轟かせたが，ムーゾン(1639)，アラス(1640)の攻略で重傷を負って軍籍を退いた。その後は哲学に関心をもち，ガッサンディや，懐疑派の自由思想家ラ･モト･ル･バイエに学んだといわれるが，また同時にスカロン，シャペル，モリエールなど自由思想的傾向をもつ文人とも交わって，放蕩無頼の文筆生活をはじめた。
