A cord made of bundles of connective tissue fibers that usually serves to connect bones together. Ligaments are well developed at joints, but there are also ligaments that connect cartilage and soft tissue. Ligaments at joints strengthen the bonds between bones, but more importantly, they act as brakes that limit joint movement. Ligaments are what hold the joints of the fingers and knees in place when they are straight. The serous membrane folds that attach internal organs to the body wall are also sometimes called ligaments (e.g., the gastroduodenal ligament), but they are significantly different in appearance and structure from skeletal ligaments.
