An official position in the Mongol Empire and throughout the Yuan Dynasty. Dargachi means "conqueror, oppressor" in Mongolian and is translated into Chinese as "governor, general in charge." Its origins date back to when Genghis Khan, on his Western expedition, appointed dargachis as deputies and governors in newly conquered cities to maintain order and govern them. During Genghis Khan's time, they were responsible for all duties related to governing conquered territories, such as tax collection, relay races, and household surveys. Later, when the Mongol advance into China began, the point governance of each city in Central Asia no longer suited the reality, so dargachis were established to oversee a wide district over multiple dargachis.
