Japan's first commercial literary magazine. Founded in October 1888 (Meiji 21), and ceased publication in June 1893. 109 issues in total. Published by Kinkodo. It covered most of the writers of the time, and showed the fluctuations and standards of the literary world in the early 1880s. Yamada Bimyo edited it until issue 38, and his personality as a reformist was strongly displayed. After that, writers from the Kenyusha group, who were in conflict with Yamada, also joined, and the writers expanded, but the magazine's distinctive character faded and it gradually lost its appeal. Representative works include Koda Rohan's "Tsuyudandan," Saganoya Omuro's "First Love," Futabatei Shimei's "Ukigumo" (Floating Clouds), the third volume, "Meguriahi," and Ozaki Koyo's "Two Wives." A reprint edition (1984, Fuji Publishing) has been published. [Yamada Yusaku] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
