Thassos [island] - Thassos
An island in the northern Aegean Sea, about 10 km from the Greek mainland. Mountainous, zinc and petroleum are mined, and grapes and olives are cultivated. It has been known as a gold producing area since ancient times. It was developed as an Ionian colony in the 8th century BC, and flourished under the Byzantine Empire. After being ruled by Turkey, it became a Greek territory in 1913. 379 km2 . Population: 13,111 (1990).
