An island in the northern Aegean Sea, about 10 km from the Greek mainland. Mountainous, zinc and petroleum are mined, and grapes and olives are cultivated. It has been known as a gold producing area since ancient times. It was developed as an Ionian colony in the 8th century BC, and flourished under the Byzantine Empire.
