Labé, Louise
[Born] Around 1524
[Died] 1566
A French female poet. Born to P. Charlie (also known as Labé), a wealthy Lyon net merchant, she was known as La Belle Cordière ("The Net Merchant"). She was extremely beautiful, well versed in classical languages, and well educated. She was also an excellent horse rider and swordsman, and loved adventure. She is said to have dressed as a man and served in the army. She married Agnemont Perrin, who was in the same business as her father, and opened a salon in her mansion in Lyon, inviting poets and writers such as M. Séb. As a poet, she belonged to the "School of Lyon," and her Collected Works (1555) contains love poems full of unrestrained passion and a prose dialogue called Débat de folie et d'amour (Dispute between Madness and Love).
