Eifukuji Temple

Japanese: 永福寺 - えいふくじ

A temple of the Otani branch of the Shinshu sect in Toyama City. Its mountain name is Iozan, and it is commonly known as Shoji Temple. According to temple legend, in 783 (Enryaku 2), the monk Jojo followed the wishes of his teacher Taicho and founded the temple in the mountains of Io in Tonami County. It was called Shogoji Temple and belonged to the Shingon sect. In 1471 (Bunmei 3), the temple's chief priest Jakujo converted to Renyo and changed his Buddhist name to Dokai. In 1476, Renyo moved the temple to Saigawa Nanamura in Tonami County, renamed it Shoji Temple, and appointed his nephew Renshin as chief priest. This marked the revival of the temple. In 1596 (Keicho 1), Maeda Toshinaga designated this temple as the head of the general register of over 300 temples in the Echigo-Tohoku region, and in 1599, Kyonyo of Hongan-ji Temple gave the temple the name Eifuku-ji in recognition of its achievements in the Battle of Ishiyama and the East-West division of the temple, and it was listed as a temple in the Eisei-in family estate.

富山市にある真宗大谷派の寺。山号は医王山。通称は松寺。寺伝によれば，783年(延暦2)僧浄定がその師泰澄の遺志をついで礪(砺)波郡の医王山中に創建，聖護寺と称し，真言宗に属していた。1471年(文明3)当寺の住持寂浄は蓮如に帰依し，法名を道海と改め，76年蓮如は当寺を礪波郡の才川七村へ移し，松寺と改めて甥の蓮真を住持にすえた。これが当寺の中興である。1596年(慶長1)前田利長は当寺を越中東方300余寺の総録所触頭（ふれがしら）と定め，99年本願寺の教如は石山合戦ならびに東西分派の功績をもって永福寺の寺号を与え，永世院家地（えいせいいんげじ）の寺格に列した。
