The capital of the Kingdom of Morocco. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it lies 90 km northeast of Casablanca on a terrace at the mouth of the Bou Regreg river, with the towns of Rabat to the west and Salā to the east across the river. Population 1,386,000 (1994). Salā was an ancient Roman colonial city with an old medina. In addition to carpet manufacturing, the city is home to food, textile, and chemical industries. Rabat originated as a small Muslim fortress (ribat, rabat) that was established across the river from Salā in the 10th and 11th centuries. モロッコ王国の首都。大西洋に面しカサブランカの北東90km,ブー・レグレグ河口の段丘上にあり,川を挟んで西がラバトal‐Ribāṭ,東がサレSalāの町。人口138万6000(1994)。サレは古代ローマ時代の植民都市で古い市街メディナがある。じゅうたん製造のほか食品,繊維,化学などの工業が立地する。ラバトは10~11世紀サレの対岸に設営されたイスラム教徒の小要塞=修行所(リバート,ラバト)に起源をもつ。
