Pinakotheke (English spelling)

…An ancient Greek school, so to speak, especially the academic research center in Alexandria during the Hellenistic period. In Latin, it was called museum, which became the word for art museum or museum in various European languages, but in ancient Greece, art collections were not called mouseions (they were called pinakotheke), and the original meaning was shrines to the nine Muses (the plural form of the Muses, which corresponds to the English word muse) who were in charge of the arts and music. The school was formed as a religious association.
