...He transferred the characteristics of the Roman Baroque architecture and decoration by Bernini and Borromini, such as the dominance of curves, the dynamic unity of the whole, and the emphasis on facades, to the literary dimension, and he considered the following typical Baroque works: the court ballet in which the witch Circe and the shape-shifting sea god Proteus play an active role, and in which magic castles, the Argonauts, strange animals, and Saint Ignatius appear one after another; the plays of Lotrou, Scudéry, and Corneille, in which the protagonists pretend to be insane or disguised, or fall into confusion due to double identities and mistakes; and the poems of de Brive, La Menardière, and de Bio, which sing of fleeting, floating things such as whirlwinds, clouds, bubbles, trembling water, and flames. Giovanni Getto, in regard to Italian literature, cites the philosopher Bruno, who was burned at the stake by the Inquisition, Campanella, who is famous for "The City of the Sun," and Marino. In "Heroic Madness," Bruno sings of Actaeon, who pursues Artemis, the goddess of truth and beauty, even at the cost of his own life: "The butterfly that flies towards the light that tempts its soul, does not know the fate of its own body, which will be burned by the flames and perish."

From Piedmont

...The exile also served as an opportunity to connect the intellectuals of the north with the people of the south, and major Sicilian writers such as E. Vittorini and L. Sciascia made Einaudi their literary base. The names of Gianfranco Contini (1912- ), professor at the universities of Florence and Pisa, who achieved the highest level of literary research after the war, Giovanni Getto (1913- ), professor at the University of Turin, and A. Momigliano, a famous professor at the University of Florence before the war, cannot be overlooked as natives of the Piedmont region. Among the newer generation, there is E. Sanguineti, who was assistant to Jet at the University of Turin and is now a professor at the University of Genoa, and U. Eco, who was also assistant in the philosophy department at the University of Turin and is now a professor at the University of Bologna. ...
