Coffey, A.

...It gained the reputation it has today as a result of the mass production of grain whiskey using a continuous still called a patent still. The patent still was invented in 1831 by Aeneas Coffey of Dublin. With the advent of this still, ungerminated grains such as barley, rye, oats, and corn could be used as raw materials by mixing them with malt. The resulting distillate, which is about 94% alcohol, can be diluted and aged in barrels to produce a lighter flavor.
