Miyako Jofu

Japanese:
Miyako Jofu

This is a ramie fabric produced on Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture, and its origins are said to date back to the Tensho period (1573-92). It was called Miyako Konjofu, and was used as a tribute cloth, and was woven to order by the Satsuma Domain. It is said that what was called Satsumajofu in the Edo period was this Miyakojofu and Yaeyamajofu produced on Yaeyama and Ishigaki Islands. Around 1887 (Meiji 20), it was once actively produced as a side job by the women of the samurai class in Hirara, but later the quality began to decline somewhat as cheaper Taiwanese choma was used.

Miyako Jofu has long been known for its thinness, and it was said that the finest pieces could fit through the holes in Tenpo coins. It has a unique finishing method, where it is boiled in a liquid made from pine needles, glued with wheat gluten or kudzu starch, dried, pounded with a pestle, washed with water to remove the glue, and then the process is repeated several times to finish. Compared to Yaeyama Jofu, it is pounded more times, giving it a unique luster. In 1978 (Showa 53), the Miyako Jofu Preservation Organization was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure).
