…There are speed records based on the regulations of the International Automobile Federation, time records for a certain distance, and distance records for a certain period of time, but the most interesting is the speed record for cars with unlimited displacement. A car drives a straight course of 2 km round trip and the average speed is calculated. The previous officially recognized record was 1001.446 km/h, set in 1970 by American G. Caverich in a car equipped with a rocket engine.

The world's first race is said to have taken place in 1887, two years after the invention of the internal combustion engine automobile, on a 30km course between Paris and Versailles in France. This was a demonstration run to demonstrate to the public the durability and practicality of automobiles.
