A daily newspaper published in Tokyo before World War II. Its predecessor was Konnichi Shimbun, first published on September 25, 1884 (Meiji 17), as an evening paper written by Kanagaki Robun. On November 16, 1888, it changed its title to Miyako Shimbun and became a morning theater paper, publishing editorials and detective stories under the editorship of Kuroiwa Ruiko. On February 1 the following year, it changed its title to Miyako Shimbun, and from then on it gained popularity among the common people with its unique editorial policy, which placed emphasis on literature, plays, and theatrical performances, and included advertisements for the entertainment industry. In May 1892, it came under the ownership of Kusumoto Masataka (1838-1902), and as it took on a Kaishinto (progressive party) color, it fell into financial difficulties in the Taisho era. On December 2, 1919 (Taisho 8), Eisuke Fukuda, a textile businessman from Ashikaga, bought the paper and revamped it by focusing on the business column and adding a raw silk column and a radio column. The paper continued to be run healthily under the principle of independence, and continued to develop independently amid the decline of Tokyo newspapers after the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. On October 1, 1942 (Showa 17), it merged with the Kokumin Shimbun as part of a wartime newspaper consolidation, and became the Tokyo Shimbun.
