It is often caused by functional disorders of the small intestine, but in acute cases, it is often accompanied by disorders of the stomach and large intestine. 病原性大腸菌などの細菌感染，腸炎，糖・タンパク消化の異常などによって消化能力が損われた状態。腹部膨満感，腹痛，胸やけ，放屁のほか，しばしば，下痢または不消化便を認める。小腸の機能障害によることが多いが，急性の場合は胃・大腸の障害を伴うことが多い。糖消化異常は発酵性の，タンパク消化異常は腐敗性の消化不良を起こす。各種胃腸薬の投与，食事療法により治療。〔消化不良症〕　乳児の下痢につけられたドイツ流の病名で，アメリカ学派は乳児下痢症と呼ぶ。細菌またはウイルスの感染が原因のことが多く，また乳糖不耐症によることもあり，まれに食事の与え方の間違いによることも。激しいものは嘔吐(おうと)，発熱，昏睡(こんすい)などの中毒症状を伴い，消化不良性中毒症と呼ばれる。程度に応じて食事制限するが，水分補給に気をつける。抗生物質も用いる。
