1693‐1739 English playwright. Known for his family tragedies such as The London Merchant (1731) and A Fatal Curiosity (1736). The former in particular is considered the first bourgeois tragedy in England, as it features bourgeois characters rather than aristocrats, and the majority of the dialogue is written in prose rather than verse. Although it is poorly regarded today, it was a groundbreaking work in the history of theatre. It also had a major influence on continental European writers such as Diderot and Lessing.
