An architectural term. A recess in the wall of a room or corridor. They can range from large ones where a bed can be placed to more like a niche for displaying vases. The word comes from the Arabic word for arch. In 17th-century French architecture, they were built on a large scale and in a luxurious way as reception rooms for ladies. In the 18th century, they became elegant small rooms, and during the Empire style, they became spaces surrounded by columns.
