〘 noun 〙① During the Edo period, officials employed by the magistrates of distant provinces, county governors, and local governors in their assigned territories. Native officials. ※Tenmei Shusei decree - 23, October 1764, Meiwa 1 "If there are any local officials in Sa Province who are eligible to serve as accountants, it is best to consider whether they are employed by the magistrates or local governors, and to send them in accordance with the agreement of both parties."② During the Edo period, native officials who were involved in Nagasaki's city administration and trade. These included town elders, town otona , group leaders, day officials, Nagasaki Kaisho officials, Chinese liaison officers, Dutch liaison officers , connoisseurs, lookout officers, and Chinese liaison officers. All of them were from townspeople, but in principle their positions were hereditary and they had the right to share in the profits from foreign trade. *Essay: Street Extravagances (around 1855) 5 "While working in Nagasaki, an incident occurred in which the local officials there took steps to deal with a case of non-compliance" 3. In the early Meiji period, an official with junior rank was in charge of the administration of the islands of Oshima, Miyakejima, Hachijojima, Mikurajima, Kozushima, and Niijima under Tokyo Prefecture.

〘名〙① 江戸時代、遠国奉行、郡代、代官などが任地で採用した役人。土着の役人。※御触書天明集成‐二三・明和元年(1764)一〇月「御勘定奉行え 佐州地役人之内、明跡有之節、奉行附御代官附と不片寄、双方申合、取遣致候之様可被心得候」② 江戸時代、長崎の市政および貿易などに携わった土着の役人。町年寄、町乙名(おとな)、組頭、日行使(にちぎょうじ)、長崎会所諸役人、唐通事、和蘭通事、目利(めきき)、遠見番、唐人番などが含まれ、いずれも町人出身者であったが、原則としてその職を世襲し、外国貿易による利潤の分配にあずかる権利を有した。※随筆・巷街贅説(1855頃か)五「長崎表在勤の砌、同所地役人共不届の取計致し候一件」③ 明治前期、東京府下の大島、三宅島、八丈島、御蔵島、神津島、新島で、島の行政をつかさどった判任官待遇の役人。
