〘 noun 〙① During the Edo period, officials employed by the magistrates of distant provinces, county governors, and local governors in their assigned territories. 〘名〙① 江戸時代、遠国奉行、郡代、代官などが任地で採用した役人。土着の役人。※御触書天明集成‐二三・明和元年（1764）一〇月「御勘定奉行え佐州地役人之内、明跡有之節、奉行附御代官附と不片寄、双方申合、取遣致候之様可被心得候」② 江戸時代、長崎の市政および貿易などに携わった土着の役人。町年寄、町乙名(おとな)、組頭、日行使(にちぎょうじ)、長崎会所諸役人、唐通事、和蘭通事、目利(めきき)、遠見番、唐人番などが含まれ、いずれも町人出身者であったが、原則としてその職を世襲し、外国貿易による利潤の分配にあずかる権利を有した。※随筆・巷街贅説（1855頃か）五「長崎表在勤の砌、同所地役人共不届の取計致し候一件」③ 明治前期、東京府下の大島、三宅島、八丈島、御蔵島、神津島、新島で、島の行政をつかさどった判任官待遇の役人。
