Japanese: ミヤオ族(苗族) - ミヤオぞく（英語表記）Miáo zú

A tribe living in southwestern China, as well as in Vietnam, Thailand, and Laos. In China, they are counted as one of the minority groups. They are also called the Miao or Meo. According to a map of Miaojiang in the Miao Defense Guide compiled by Yan Ruyu in the late Qing Dynasty, the Miao's range extends west of today's Yuanjiang (Hunan Province), south of Youshui, north of Chenshui, and east of the border of Xiang (Hunan Province) and Qian (Guizhou Province). The area is surrounded by rivers on three sides, north, east, and south, and the west is covered by high mountains, forming a single natural environment.

中国の西南部，およびベトナム，タイ，ラオスなどに居住する種族。中国では少数民族の一つにかぞえられる。ミャオ族，メオ族とも呼ばれる。ミヤオ族の分布範囲は，清末の厳如煜（げんじよいく）編《苗防備覧》の苗疆（びようきよう）全図によれば，今日の沅江（げんこう）(湖南省)以西，酉水（ゆうすい）以南，辰水以北および湘(湖南省)･黔（けん）(貴州省)交界以東の地域に広がりを見せ，その地の北部･東部･南部3面は河川でかこまれ，西面は高山に覆われて一つの自然的環境が形成されているという。
