It is one of the Paleo-Siberian languages, which, together with Chukchi and Koryak, form the Luolawetlan language family (also simply called Luolawetlan). It is spoken on several islands in the Kamchatka Peninsula by about 2,500 people. In Russia it is also called Itelmen, after the name given to the ethnic group.
