...This term has come to be widely used in recent years as a translation of "ethnic music" (it was adopted into Japanese dictionaries in the 1970s), but its meaning is not unambiguous. Since "ethnic music" originally meant "music unique to a group of people (= an ethnic group) with a common language and culture," in a broad sense, the works of JS Bach, Joruri by Takemoto Gidayu, and the music of the Beatles could all be called "ethnic music," but in practice these are excluded.
