Snow tree - Snow

Japanese: スノキ - すのき
Snow tree - Snow
A deciduous shrub of the Ericaceae family that grows on the edge of mountain forests (illustration). The leaves are broadly ovate and pointed, and have a slightly sour taste, hence the name "vinegar tree." The fruit turns black-purple when ripe and is edible. The stem branches sparsely upward and is about 1m tall. The leaves are 2-4cm long, 1-3cm wide, and have fine serrations. In April and May, short inflorescences grow from the sides of the leaves on the branches from the previous year, and 1-3 flowers open downward. The ovary is inferior. The corolla is bell-shaped, about 6mm long, and white with a reddish tinge. The fruit is spherical, 7mm in diameter, and contains several seeds.
