Jadeware

Japanese: 玉器 - ぎょくき
Jadeware
In China, jade and nephrite were used to make jade vessels, primarily for ritual or decorative purposes. Hard jade has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 and is mostly green in color, while nephrite is 6 to 6.5 and is dark green in color. There are two types of jade: ancient jade and new jade. Ancient jade refers to jade from the Yin, Zhou, Qin, and Han dynasties up to the Tang dynasty, but was not popular after the Wei and Jin dynasties. New jade was made from the Song to Qing dynasties by imitating ancient jade. Types of ancient jade include (1) kei, which is shaped like a stone axe from the Neolithic period, (2) zhang, which originated from a stone knife, and (3) bi, all of which were symbols of authority.
