A district in the north of Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Formerly Tsukuba Town. Incorporated into Tsukuba City in 1988 (Showa 63). Located at the southwest foot of Mount Tsukuba. Opened in ancient times by worship of Mount Tsukuba, the temple town of Tsukuba was formed when Tsukuba-san Temple (Chuzen-ji Temple) was founded in the early Heian period. Oda in the district was the castle residence of the Oda clan, while Hojo was a commercial area on the key route to the approach to Mount Tsukuba Shrine, and both prospered. In the early modern period, Tsukuba was the domain of temples and shrines, while the rest was the domain of the Tsuchiura Domain. The ruins of Oda Castle, where Kitabatake Chikafusa wrote "Jinnō Shōtōki," is a nationally designated historic site.
